Vincent L. Maynes, 95, passed away at Mt. Ascutney Hospital on Sunday, August 5th after a brief illness. He was born on January 23, 1917 in Woodstock, VT, son of Edward Francis Maynes and Annie O. Liberty.
Vince graduated from Woodstock High School in 1935. During his high school years and following graduation, he worked at Clough's Pharmacy and Emery's Clothing Store in Woodstock. In the early years of WWII, he volunteered at the 'Watch Tower' in Woodstock, manned 24 hours a day to spot enemy airplanes. In 1943 he enlisted in the US Navy, assigned to the Hospital Corps and stationed at Naval Hospitals in New Orleans and Norman, Oklahoma. He was honorably discharged in January 1946 as a Pharmacist's Mate 2nd Class. He was hired under the GI Bill by Benton Dryden at the Vermont Standard as an apprentice and became a printer. In 1971 when Dryden retired, Vincent and five other staff members leased and published the newspaper until 1976 when the paper was sold. Vincent retired in 1978 after 32 years as a printer.
Vincent married Pauline I. Barron on October 21, 1940 in Woodstock where they lived and raised their four children in the Maple Street home where Vince was born and raised. Upon retirement in 1978, they moved to Cape Cod. Subsequently, they lived in Randolph and Quechee, wintering for twenty years in Taveres, FL. Vince was an avid, lifelong reader, an excellent golfer, and also enjoyed hiking, snow shoeing, and cross-country skiing until the age of 92. In 2009 they moved to Cox House at the Historic Homes of Runnemede in Windsor.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Polly; son-Robert V. Maynes and wife, Bobbe, of Burlington; daughters Paula M. Stearns and husband, Wesley, of Quechee; Janet M. Lord and husband Selden, 'Buz,' of Cornish, NH, Judith A. Maynes and husband Philip of Barnard; 11 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, several cousins, nieces and nephews, and two sisters-in-law, Esther Fiske Maynes and Stella Jaycox Barron of Woodstock.
He was predeceased by his parents, four brothers, Francis, Roderic, Harold, Donald, and two sisters, Mary (who died in infancy) and Noreen Maynes Eaton.
A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Snow Catholic Church in Woodstock at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 8th, 2012. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association or charity of choice.
