Sylvia Ewell Reed, 90, of Hanover, NH and Camden, Maine, died peacefully at home November 3rd in her art studio she had recently relocated to Woodstock Terrace, with family by her side. Sylvia was born June 7, 1924 in Rochester, New York to parents Millicent and Glenn Ewell. The youngest of three children, Sylvia married her high school sweetheart John Davies Reed just before he left overseas for WWII. While John was serving his country as a pilot in the war Sylvia volunteered for the American Red Cross.

After the war, Sylvia and John lived in Hanover, NH where John graduated from Dartmouth College, class of 1945. Sylvia and John moved to Lincoln Massachusetts where they raised four children, Jack, Janet, Holly, and Alan. Sylvia was predeceased by her loving husband John in 1985, her daughter Janet in 2000, and her sister Millicent Allen.

Sylvia's memory will continue to flourish in the hearts of her children, daughter Holly Warren Reed, son John Davies Reed, Jr., and son Alan Hunt Reed, as well as through her brother Matson Ewell, her eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Sylvia, an accomplished artist will always be remembered for her love of the beauty in nature and in life, which she expressed through her paintings. A graduate of the Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA, Sylvia summered in Prospect Harbor, Maine, where she was happiest painting by the ocean. Her paintings based on the poetry of Robert Frost and paintings of ocean scenes of Maine were shown throughout New England. Sylvia was active with the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA, the Hopkins Center in Hanover, NH, and the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockville, ME. Beloved mother, grandmother and artist, a member of the "greatest generation", Sylvia will always be remembered for her wisdom and knowledge about life as well as her sense of humor and love of art.
