Stewart F. Barr, 86, died peacefully surrounded by his family Tuesday afternoon August 9, 2011 at the Veterans Hospital in White River Jct., Vermont.
He was born on the home farm on Fletcher Hill South Woodstock, VT February 8, 1925. The son of Gladys A. (Bagley) and Frank C. Barr. He was educated in the Fletcher Hill and Woodstock Schools. He served in the Army from 1943 to 1946 involving the Normandy Invasion in France on Omaha Beach on D-Day + 1 receiving three bronze campaign stars for the Normandy, Northern France, and Rhineland. He was discharged with the rank of Technician Fourth Grade.
He married Audrey Else (Schimsheimer) on May 2, 1948.
He worked for Stimets Gas and Electric from 1946 to 1951. Then he went to work for Cone Automatic in Windsor, retiring in 1985 as foreman after 34 years of service. He received his diploma from Woodstock Union High School in 2003.
One of his greatest joys outside his children and grandchildren was grafting apple trees and gardening. He was also an accomplished musician playing the guitar, fiddle, and mandolin. During his lifetime he entertained many people with his music and humor. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, two sons and their families, Dennis and Nancy Barr, Curtis and Wendy Barr, one daughter Candy Barr, five grandchildren, Clayton and Craig Bridge, Abbie Pope and her husband David, Jill Barr and Christopher Barr, six great grandchildren, Courtney, Bonnie, Craig Jr., Colby, Cleo Bridge and Emmelyn Pope, his sister Vera Fuller and many nieces and nephwes. In addition to his parents he is pre deceased by a brother Earl in 2004 and an infant sister baby Nancy.
Services will be held privately at a later date.
