Shirley V. Holt, a resident of Springfield, VT passed away October 2nd, 2023. Her last hours were in the company of family and friends and the care of medical staff members. She was born in Newport, VT, June 7th, 1932, the daughter of Lloyd Whittier and Addie (Meigs) Whittier. She grew up in Castleton, Poultney and West Bridgewater. She was married to Ora Mosher Jr. on December 24th, 1951 in Bridgewater, VT. They lived their first few years in North Carolina where her husband was stationed with the Marine Corps. After leaving the service, they lived in Bridgewater and then moved to Manchester, NH and later settled in Ludlow, VT until her husband's death on March 2nd, 1971.
She worked numerous years in the textile mills in Ludlow and Bridgewater, Vermont. After moving to Springfield, Vermont, she worked in the hospitality services. Shirley enjoyed keeping busy and bring with people. She enjoyed reading, shopping and dancing. She especially likes going to the Lone Star Ranch in Merrimack, NH with her husband where different celebrities came from Nashville's Grand Ole Opry each weekend to entertain. Throughout the years, Shirley enjoyed the company of her many pets – dogs and particularly her beloved cats. She lived many years alone and was a resourceful person and did her own property upkeep and took pride in keeping her vehicles well maintained and cared for. She was especially proud of her family and kept many memorable family photographs on display at her home. She always looked forward to the arrival of a new family member, and anxiously awaited family gatherings for a chance to meet the latest addition.
A devoted member of the United Methodist Church, she was a faithful reader of her bible, reading it through at least once.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her parents and two brothers, Norman Whittier and Garth Whittier who passed away in 1945 serving his country in World War II at the Battle of the Bulge, and a sister, Catherine McKenney. Her niece, Lillian Delong also predeceased her. Survivors include her nieces and nephews, Albert Whittier, Nancy Bachelder, Gary McKenney, Ann Vella, and Douglas McKenney, and many grand nieces and grand nephews.
Shirley also had many friends and acquaintances over the years. She treasured and cherished all of them. The family would like to extend a word of thanks to the medical teams at Springfield Hospital and Dartmouth Health in Lebanon, NH. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock, VT. There will be no calling hours but a graveside service will be held at the Riverside Cemetery in Killington, VT on Friday, October 6th, 2023 at 1:00pm.
