Seymour Greenwald,
M.D.
March 31, 2022
Seymour Greenwald, M.D. ("Sy") passed away peacefully at his home in Quechee, VT on March 31, just days prior to his 90 th birthday. Sy was a beloved doctor, husband, father, and grandfather whose life was filled with accomplishments, travel, and joyous family gatherings.
Sy was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1932 to Meyer and Anna (Jacobowitz) Greenwald. He grew up in Brooklyn, graduated from Brooklyn College in 1952, and received his MD from the University of Geneva in Switzerland in 1958. While in Switzerland Sy was joined by his future wife, Miriam Feigenbaum, also from Brooklyn, and they were married in Geneva in 1958. The couple remained happily married for 63 years.
Sy and Miriam settled in Baldwin, NY in 1962 where they raised three children. Sy owned and managed a successful Internal Medicine practice on Long Island for 45 years, and he was beloved by his patients and well respected by his peers. Sy was a member and former President of the Nassau County Medical Society.
Sy and Miriam were avid world travelers who visited every continent but Antarctica. This provided Sy with a wealth of knowledge about the world, and Sy relished sharing that knowledge with family, friends, and new acquaintances. Sy's interest in stamps during childhood led to a keen interest in geography and world history, and he developed an impressive international stamp collection. Sy's other hobbies included fishing, gardening, and sports. He played basketball and tennis and followed professional basketball closely.
Upon retiring, Sy and Miriam relocated to Quechee, VT which had drawn their interest as a peaceful and beautiful place during prior travels through Vermont, and also provided an opportunity to be near his son Rick and his family. In Vermont, Sy actively participated in a local stamp club and served as a volunteer at Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS). Family gatherings and celebrations with children and grandchildren were frequent and brought Sy much joy.
Sy is survived by his wife Miriam, his three sons (Dave, Rob, Rick) and three daughters-in-law (Beth, Sande, Ann), and his 6 grandchildren (Allison, Michael, Ben, Hannah, Evan, Max).
A funeral service will be held at Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock, VT on Friday April 8 at 1:30 PM, immediately followed by the burial. A viewing will be available prior to the service, from 12:30 to 1:15 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations be made to VINS in Quechee, VT or the charity of your choice in his honor.
