Scott W. Dudley, Sr., of Woodstock, Vermont, passed away on July 3, 2012, at the age of 88 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center following a courageous effort to recovery from surgery. He was born on March 15, 1924, in Orleans, Vermont and was the son of Eugene P. and Beatrice M. (McGoff) Dudley. He attended Orleans, Morrisville and Woodstock public schools, graduating in 1942 from Woodstock High School. He was an accomplished athlete who played both baseball – making the varsity team as a freshman – and basketball.
After graduation, he worked at the Woodstock Pharmacy. In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II with the Marines as a hospital corpsman in the South Pacific. He participated in the invasion of Guam and later served as a member of the Construction Battalion (CBs). While on Guam, he contracted malaria. Following his service overseas, he was enrolled in the Navy V12 program in which he attended Princeton University and Middlebury College. After three years of service, he was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to Woodstock.
Following the war, he attended the University of Vermont and later took a position as paymaster for Cone Automatic Machine Co. in Windsor. He was married in December 1950 to Elizabeth Stevens of N. Abington, Massachusetts, and re-married in 1956 to Anna E. (Wolstencroft) Watson of Woodstock.
He worked as a bookkeeper for Gerrish Motors, Inc. in Woodstock. Following that, he was employed by Woodstock Resort Corporation in various positions at Mt. Tom/Suicide Six ski areas and at Woodstock Country Club (WCC), including as manager of WCC. He later worked for Woodstock Country School and the Vermont Workshop before joining F.A. Richmond Inc. as a bookkeeper starting in 1984 until his retirement in 1997.
He also served for a period as the Treasurer of both the Town and Village of Woodstock.
He was a member of the Ora E. Paul American Legion Post #24, the Woodstock Lodge #31 of the F & AM (Masons), and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by a daughter Cheryl A. Dudley of Woodstock and her son Benjamin Wodiska of Rehoboth, Delaware; a son Scott W. Dudley, Jr. and wife Andrea and their children Samuel and Anna, all of Olathe, Kansas; a brother W. Bruce Dudley of Woodstock; a sister Priscilla (Diette) Salem of Bennington, Vermont; and a brother Frederic Diette of Berndardsville, New Jersey. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by siblings Patricia (Diette) Courtney, Philip Diette, and Alan Diette.
Visitation will be on Saturday, July 14th, 2:00 - 3:30 pm at Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock, followed by a graveside service at 4 pm at Riverside Cemetery.
