North Pomfret, Vermont
Ruth Ellen Hasson, 91, passed away on Tuesday, February 27 in Brooklyn, NY following a brief illness.
Ruth was born in Brockton, MA on May 22, 1926, the daughter of John and Mary (Molly) Maguire and was one of nine children. After graduating from Brockton High School, she attended Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Boston, MA. She began her professional career working at R.H. Stearns in Boston which is where she met her future husband, Francis Hasson.
On October 16, 1948 they were married in Brockton and eventually moved to Scituate, MA where they started their family. When the father of a close childhood friend alerted them to a business opportunity in Vermont, they purchased the South Woodstock Country Store in 1958, moving with their family of six children there in 1959. Francis and Ruth operated the store until 1969, selling it in 1973 and moving to North Pomfret, VT.
Ruth possessed a keen intellect along with a wide ranging curiosity of worldly affairs, history and the arts, all fueled by a voracious appetite for reading. One of her greatest gifts was instilling the same love of reading, music, and the arts in each of her children. Tough minded and independent, she also had a wonderful and mischievous sense of humor, taking particular delight in the comedy of George Carlin, Dick Gregory and other like-minded comedians who specialized in taking on established institutions and political personalities. She loved vegetable gardening with Francis and, being the incredible cook that she was, adhered strictly to the culinary guidance of Julia Child and Rose Levy Beranbaum. The resulting meals and desserts were memorable and delicious.
She is survived by her brother Richard Maguire (Mary Jo); daughters Molly, Katherine, Anne and two sons, Thomas (Patty) and James (Kim), daughter-in-law, Antoinette Hasson; three grandsons, Daniel (Allison), Andrew (Claire) and Tobin and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by Francis and her son Deke.
There will be a private graveside service at a later date when she will be buried alongside her husband in the Burns Cemetery in Pomfret. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Vermont Institute of Natural Science, the North Pomfret Fire Department or The Vermont Land Trust. Condolences can be sent to the family c/o Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock, VT.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock, VT.
