Rupert C. Leonard, 85, passed away on Wednesday afternoon April 15th at the Brookside Nursing Home in White River Jct., Vermont.
Rupert was born on December 27, 1929 in North Clarendon, Vermont the son of William D. and Lillian (Rorison) Leonard.
Rupert graduated from Rutland High School in 1949. He served in the U.S. Army in an artillery division. While in the service at Fort Sill, OK he was on a nuclear artillery gun crew. Rupert settled back in Woodstock Vermont where he started a lifelong career in Plumbing & Heating, owning his own business and becoming an active community member. He married Barbara Frechette in 1959. Rupert was a member of the Woodstock American Legion Ora E. Paul Post and a past Post Commander, ELKS, Plumbing Heating & Cooling Contractors Association of Vermont, voted contractor of the year in 1988, and served as a Woodstock Village Trustee from 1994-2002.
In addition to spending time with family and friends Rupert loved to fish, hunt, go camping, and most of all play golf. He enjoyed fishing trips to Canada with friends and many years of stalking the elusive side hill croncher (white tail deer) of Bridgewater Chateauguay. After retirement he enjoyed several trips to Colorado where he went camping with his daughter and son in-law.
Rupert is survived by his wife Barbara (Frechette) Leonard of Woodstock, VT, a daughter, Candy Witt, husband Randy of Castle Rock, CO, a son Anthony W. Leonard, wife Kristin of Springfield, VT, and a daughter Shelly L. Sanderson, husband David of White River Jct., VT, and 5 grandchildren, Ryan, Jeff & Jessica Sanderson, Molly & Nathan Leonard. In addition to his parents he is pre deceased by his 1st wife Laura (Lear) Leonard, a sister Dhu Nichols, a brother Duward Leonard, and a son Richard Jay Leonard.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday April 26th at 2:00pm at the Bridgewater Congregational Church in Bridgewater, Vermont. Burial with military honors will follow in the Riverside Cemetery in Woodstock, Vermont.
