Robert P. Gerety, MD passed away at his home in West Hartford, Vermont on December 8, 2015 at the age of 91. He was born on September 1, 1924 in Shelton, Connecticut to Charlotte Daly Gerety and Peter L. Gerety. He was the eighth of nine boys. He was raised in Fairfield, Connecticut and graduated from Roger Ludlow High School in 1942. He attended the US Naval Academy and Fordham University. In 1949 he married Margaret, ("Maggie"), Beattie who was the love of his life. Their son, Robert P. Gerety, Jr., was born in 1951. Dr. Gerety attended Yale University School of Medicine and graduated in 1952.
Dr. Gerety established a private medical practice in Fairfield, Connecticut with his brother, Edward Gerety in 1955. In 1969 he left private practice and began his second career as an emergency room physician. After a brief period at Wesson Memorial Hospital in Springfield, Massachusetts, he joined the emergency room practice at Bridgeport Hospital in Bridgeport, Connecticut where he worked until his retirement in 1987. He loved the practice of medicine which, aside from his family, was the core of his life. After retirement, Dr. Gerety and his wife Maggie lived in Reading, Vermont and Sanibel, Florida. They moved to West Hartford, Vermont in 2006.
Dr. Gerety was pre-deceased by his wife Maggie, and his brothers; Pierce, William, John, Edward, Eugene, Thomas, and Richard who died in World War II at the age of 18. Dr. Gerety is survived by his eldest brother Archbishop Emeritus Peter L. Gerety of Newark, New Jersey, his son Robert P. Gerety, Jr. and his wife Janet of Wilder, Vermont, three grandchildren; Katherine Graves of Richmond, Vermont and her husband Brett Graves, Lyle P. Gerety of Winooski, Vermont, Matthew R. Gerety of Portland, Maine, and a great grandson Owen R. Graves, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Dr. Gerety will be remembered by his friends and family as a loving and caring husband, father and friend with an unbounded zest for life, and by his countless medical patients as a compassionate physician.
Memorial visitation hours will be at the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock, Vermont on Friday December 11, 2015 from 6PM to 8PM. A funeral mass will be conducted at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic church in Norwich, Vermont on Saturday December 12, 2015 at 10:00AM.
