Woodstock, Vermont
Richard A. Schulz, Sr., formerly of Woodstock, VT, passed away on August 5, 2014 at Brookside Nursing home where he had been a resident for many years. He was 82 years old.
Richard was born September 11, 1931 in Mansfield, MA, one of eight children of Walter Herman Schulz & Grace (Pike) Schulz. He was the only child of the eight who graduated from High School & then he attended a Boy's State College in MA. After that Richard & his twin brother Herb joined the Army together & were awarded high achievement recognition for their work as mechanics.
Upon returning from the military, Richard married Carol Stoddard of Walpole, MA. Richard spent the next several years as a builder in the Foxborough & Mansfield, MA area. He ran a very successful construction company, building mostly new homes & was a leader in the local construction union. Then he & his family moved to Woodstock, VT & he continued in the building trade as a self employed contractor, continuing his union affiliation. One project he was involved in was a renovation with his father-in-law (Leo Stoddard ) at the VA Hospital in WRJ, VT. He was also well known as a "mister fix-it".
Richard enjoyed the company of young people and taught Sunday school in Foxborough, MA. The children were often treated to outings that included bowling, ice skating, & roller skating. Richard was a talented skater who would often waltz on ice & roller skates with his daughters. He & his family spent a lot of time camping. Eventually it turned into a caravan of many family & friends going along on this annual trek to Rangley Lake in Maine. While in VT the family enjoyed their hobby farm raising herdford cows, chickens, pigs, & horses.
Richard enjoyed sharing stories, tell jokes or play practical jokes on people. He was a gregarious man who loved to share the gift of laughter and enjoyed having a good time. While in MA, Richard's father (Walter) & several of his brothers would build & race their own cars. This led to a lifetime love of NasCar. He also was a dedicated Red Sox & New England Patriots fan. He enjoyed playing the piano, bowling, hunting & snowmobile riding.
Richard is survived by his five children: daughter Denise Hagel & Jimmy of Sebring, FL, granddaughter Callie-Jo & great-grandchildren Kaitlyn & Zachary of FL; daughter Lisa Schulz of Grafton, NH, grandchildren: Renee, Brian & Ericka, great-grandchildren: Christopher, Lindsay, Cassiday, Samantha, Kara & Eric; daughter Lori Perron & Eugene of Quechee, VT, grandson Neil Perron of Chapel Hill, NC; son Richard Schulz Jr. & Denise of Woodstock, VT, grandsons: Ben & Eric of Woodstock; son Bruce Schulz & Jody of Woodstock, VT, grandson Hunter & granddaughter Madison of Woodstock.
