Obituary

Richard A. Groeneveld, beloved husband, brother, father, and grandfather, died on July 3, 2011 at the age of 76. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Valerie (Quechee, VT), brother Frederick (Clearwater, FL), daughter Maria (Maplewood, NJ), son Peter (Narberth, PA), and five grandchildren. Dick graduated from Scotch Plains High School (NJ) in 1952, where he was the leading scorer on the basketball team. He was a graduate of Dartmouth College (B.A., 1956) and Boston University (M.A., 1963; Ph.D, 1967). A veteran of the United States Navy (1957-1960), he served as a communications officer on the U.S.S. Wasp. Dick taught mathematics at Mount Holyoke College during 1967-1970 and joined the faculty of the Statistics Department at Iowa State University (Ames, IA) in 1970, retiring in 2000 as a University Professor. Dick directed the undergraduate teaching program in statistics at Iowa State. He was a member of the American Mathematical Society and the American Statistical Association, and he authored two statistical textbooks. Active in statistical research during his retirement, Dick recently authored a research paper that is scheduled to be published in late 2011 in the journal Communications in Statistics: Theory and Methods. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Quechee Community Church on Thursday, July 7. The Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock, VT is assisting in the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation is suggested to the Friends of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, 1 Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, NH 03756.
