Phyllis D.
Lebaron
February 14, 1925 – January 2, 2019
Woodstock, Vermont
Phyllis Dutton LeBaron, 93 died Wednesday morning January 2 nd at the Mertens House surrounded by family.
Phyllis was born February 14, 1925 to parents Raymond and Florence Freeman Dutton. She lived her life in the special town of Woodstock, Vermont. In her school years she was an athlete, playing basketball and skiing the hills of Woodstock. After high school she attended Northhampton Secretary School in Northhampton, MA. She married Theodore LeBaron in 1947. When her children, Lisa and Todd, entered elementary school she became the Secretary to the principal in Woodstock. She held that position for 35 years. We would joke that she trained 5 principals during her tenure at Woodstock Elementary ending her time there with our very dear family friend, Norm Frates, at the helm.
Phyllis love was golf and she was an incredibly beautiful golfer. She was known for her fluid swing and her accurate putting. You will find her name etched many times as club champion on the walls of Woodstock Country Club. She played golf and walked at least 9 of the holes until she was in her late 80s. When it was time for her to move into assisted living she told Lisa, I'll only go if they have the Golf Channel. And they made that happen for her.
Baba, as she was known to her grandchildren, was a devoted and loving grandmother. She would travel many miles coming to visit and to help raise them whenever needed. She introduced all the children to the world of shopping. They have so many funny stories of their time in endless dressing rooms, mall courtyards and bargain hunts. She loved them fiercely. Even dementia can never take away those memories for all of us that were privileged to experience her love.
Phyllis found great comfort in the care she received from the staff at the Homestead and the Mertens House.
She is survived by her daughter Lisa Hadley of Shelburne, VT, her son Todd LeBaron of Woodsville, VT, 3 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.
A celebration of Phyllis's life will be held on Monday January 7 th at 1:pm at the Unitarian – Universalist Chapel in Woodstock.
