Obituary

Having just celebrated her 99 th birthday, Pauline (Polly) Iva Barron Maynes died peacefully Friday the 21 st of June – the Summer Solstice -- in Cedar Hill Nursing Home in Windsor, Vermont. She was born in South Pomfret, Vermont on the 27 th of May, 1920, to George and Lula Derosie Barron. The youngest of four siblings, Polly was a sister to George, Myrtle and Ruth. After completing elementary school in South Pomfret, she graduated in the class of 1937 from Woodstock High School.

Polly began her working career right after high school as a secretary for Paul Bourdon, a Woodstock attorney. During the early years she also worked part-time at both the White Cupboard Inn and the Woodstock Inn. In 1940 Polly married Vincent (Vince) L. Maynes. She and Vince both worked in the local community where Polly became a secretary for Judge Franklin S. Billings, at the law offices of Billings and Sherburne, where she remained until 1968. After furthering her secretarial career, she added bookkeeping and was employed by several Woodstock businesses including Polly Hamilton, a local Realtor. Becoming interested in selling real estate in that office, she studied for her real estate license which she obtained in 1972. The following year she joined the real estate office of the Ellis-Gould Corporation and enjoyed practicing with that firm until 1978 when she and her husband both retired. That same year, the couple decided to try a new venture and bought Singing Pines Cottages in East Sandwich on Cape Cod which they ran very successfully for the next four years.

Polly and Vince lived in Woodstock in the house on Maple Street where Vince was born. They raised their four children in that home and remained there until they moved to South Road in Woodstock before their time on Cape Cod. When they returned to Vermont in 1982, they settled in Randolph where they enjoyed playing golf in the summers, and traveling to Tavares, Florida for winters. During one of those winters, a neighbor (an artist) helped Polly pursue her interest in painting which she continued to develop back in Vermont at the Bethel Gallery. Her artwork was exhibited at art festivals in Bethel, Randolph, Montpelier, Barre, and at the Quechee Mall and now hangs in the homes of her four children, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Polly also enjoyed biking, gardening, and playing the organ, and was deeply interested in family genealogy, spending many years researching, compiling, and updating family histories for the Maynes, Barron, Liberty, Alain, and Derosie family trees. In 1994, she and Vince moved to Tall Timbers Mobile Home Park in Quechee and in 2009 moved to the Cox House, an independent living unit at the Historic Homes of Runnemede in Windsor, Vermont. In 2015, Pauline moved to Evarts House at Runnemede and just last month to Cedar Hill.

Pauline was predeceased by her beloved husband, Vince, who died on August 5, 2012 after nearly 72 years of marriage. She is survived by their four children: Paula Stearns and husband Wes, of Quechee, VT; Jan Lord and husband Selden, of Cornish, NH; Judy Maynes and husband Phil, of Barnard, VT; and Robert Maynes and wife Bobbe of Burlington, VT. She was the grandmother to nine grandchildren and twenty-seven great-grandchildren, as well as an aunt to several nieces and nephews. Pauline was also predeceased by her parents, her brother Gordon Barron, and two sisters, Myrtle Mulroy and Ruth Hood.

Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock is in charge of arrangements for a celebration of Polly's life at 11 a.m. on Tuesday the 25 th of June at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Woodstock. A private burial ceremony for family only will take place immediately following in Riverside Cemetery.
