SOUTH WOODSTOCK - Paul E. Kendall Jr., 79, died July 6, 2010, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

He was born Aug. 2, 1930, in Hanover, N.H., the son of Paul E. Sr. and Beatrice (Perry) Kendall.

He graduated from Woodstock High School in 1949 and Vermont Technical School in Randolph in 1950.

Mr. Kendall married Barbara Patenaude Sept. 8, 1956.

He worked the family dairy farm before employment at Old Woodstock Inn as night auditor, bartender and maitre d'. He later worked as resident manager for both White Cupboard Inn and for three years at Norwich Inn. In 1964, he and his wife purchased Kedron Valley Inn which was family-run through 1985. In 1971, he started a trail riding business. In 1972, he built and ran Kedron Valley Stables until his recent illness. He also spent years driving surrey and sleigh rides for the public.

He served as select board member, state representative, cemetery commissioner, Act 250 commissioner and justice of the peace. He also served as chairman of the board for South Woodstock Fire Protection Association and on the board of Green Mountain Horse Association.

Survivors include his wife of South Woodstock; two sons, Paul "Chip" Kendall II of South Woodstock and Dane Kendall of Chicago, Ill.; a grandson and an aunt.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 11, at the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 12, at South Woodstock Community Church with the Rev. Beverly Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Kendall Cemetery in South Woodstock.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Green Mountain Horse Association or Lucy MacKenzie Humane Society.
