Obituary

Woodstock, Vermont

Patricia "Pat" Osborne passed away in the early morning hours on Friday, May 26. She was at home with her daughter, Tina Miller, in Woodstock, VT. There will be a memorial service held at St James Episcopal Church in Woodstock on Saturday, June 10 at 10:00am. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.

Pat was born and raised in Canton, Ohio. The second of 4 children, she had an older sister, and a younger sister and brother. She had a wonderful childhood swimming in Lake Erie, and Cable Lake in Canton; playing golf with her dad; knitting like mad (earning herself the nickname, "The Nutty Knitter"); putting on backyard plays with her sisters, and charging admission; and, as a teenager, drawing fashion illustrations for which her sisters were often the models. They were a close family, and remained close throughout their lives.

Pat married the love of her life, Glen "Gus" Schiltz, in 1941. He was a US Air Force fighter pilot, a decorated Ace in WWII. He was shot down and killed over Korea in 1950, by then an Air Force Major. They had a son and a daughter together. Pat loved military life, she loved the built-in community of life on the base, and the family activities. She loved decorating, entertaining, playing cards & golf, and she even embraced the continual transfers.

Pat remarried in 1954 and had a daughter. Her second marriage ended in divorce, and she raised her daughter as a single working mom. And, what a mom she was. She took typing and shorthand courses, and got her first job as a medical secretary. She was smart and clever, lots of fun, super resourceful. She sewed, knit (her sweaters were carried in a gallery in Boone, NC for many years), baked like mad. She continued decorating, entertaining, playing bridge and golf, and swimming (in the ocean, now). Family outings included trips to the beach, "antiquing", the theatre, the ballet, art shows, and church - she was a devout Episcopalian. She moved from her job as a secretary to selling real estate and, of course, she excelled.

She moved up to Reading,Vermont in 1989, to join her daughter's family. She quickly found St James Church and the Woodstock community. She loved Woodstock, and after 35 years in Florida, she was happy to be back up north where Autumn brings colorful leaves, Winter brings snow, and Spring brings the excitement of new growth.

Pat was pre-deceased by her parents Ralph & Mabel Hill; her three siblings, Millie, Chris & Dick; and her daughter Pamela. She is survived by her son Stephen, her daughter Tina, and three grandchildren: Lisa, Christian, and Allison.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Pat's memory to the Thompson Senior Center, 99 Senior Ln, Woodstock, VT 05091; The Visiting Nurses/Hospice (VNH), PO Box 881, Brattleboro, VT 05302; or The Norman William's Library, 10 The Green, Woodstock, VT05091.
