Norman Williams Merrill, 68, died Thursday October 1, 2015 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire.
Norm was born October 4, 1946 in New York City, the son of Frederick Hamilton and Joan (Williams) Merrill.
Norm graduated from Brooks School in Andover, MA in 1965, the University of Vermont with a BA with honors in 1969, and the University of Cincinnati with a PhD in Latin in 1974.
He began a long and rewarding career teaching. From 1976 to 1986 he taught English and Foreign language and coached soccer and hockey at Rumsey Hall School in Washington, CT. From 1986 to 2013 Norm taught and was head of the departments of English and Foreign Language and coached hockey, soccer, and golf at Berkshire School in Sheffield, MA. Norm retired to Woodstock, Vermont in 2013.
Norm was the Woodstock Country Club golf champion an astonishing eight times. He published a book on etymology, and an article in the Journal of Public Policy titled " Who was that Woman I didn't see you with Last Night." He was the recipient of the Seaver Buck Award for excellence in teaching and the Kellogg Grant for travel.
Mr. Merrill is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jeanne (Wile) Merrill, his son Norman Williams Merrill II and his wife Jennifer Hancock, his son Dr. Richard Mark Merrill and his wife Natalie Nagy, his 5 grandchildren; Reilly, Ty, Lukas, Kyah, and Ainsley, his brother Fred Merrill and his wife Peggy, as well as a number of beloved nieces and nephews, including Killy and Gabe Merrill, Russell and Amy Morin.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, October 16th at 1:00pm in the Riverside Cemetery in Woodstock, Vermont.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in his honor to Camp Ta-Kum-Ta in South Hero, VT.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock.
