Obituary

Miriam Feigenbaum Greenwald ("Mimi") passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family, in Quechee, VT on September 2, at the age of 88. Mimi was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother whose life was filled with accomplishments, joyous family gatherings, art, and travel.

Mimi was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1935 to Max and Gertrude Feigenbaum. She excelled as a student and graduated as a Mathematics Major with Phi Beta Kappa honors from Brooklyn College at the age of 20. Mimi then did actuarial work for the Equitable Life Insurance Company in New York City, which was uncommon work for women at that time. In 1958, Mimi courageously crossed the Atlantic Ocean by boat for solo travel adventures in Europe. During those travels she met up in Paris with her friend Seymour "Sy" Greenwald, also from Brooklyn, who was studying medicine in Switzerland. Adventures turned to love, and Sy convinced Miriam to extend her stay in Europe. Mimi and Sy were married in Geneva in 1958 and they remained happily married for 63 years.

Mimi and Sy settled in Baldwin, NY in 1962 where they raised three children. In addition to managing the house and children, Mimi served as financial manager and bookkeeper for Sy's successful medical practice. In 1974, Mimi and her family beamed with pride when she earned a Master of Science Degree in Mathematics from Adelphi University. Mimi also served on the Executive Board of Union Reform Temple in Freeport, NY and in various PTA functions.

Mimi was a talented artist. She was an expert calligrapher who made handcrafted wedding invitations, marriage certificates, and wall hangings. She was also an excellent painter, specializing in oil on canvas. Other hobbies included tennis, golf, cross-country skiing, theater, opera, and puzzles. Mimi and Sy were avid world travelers who visited every continent but Antarctica.

Mimi and Sy relocated to Quechee, VT in 2003. Mimi loved the peaceful and beautiful setting and proximity to her son Rick and his family. The Quechee home served as a central family gathering point for holidays and other celebrations, centered around plentiful meals featuring Mimi's family recipes. Mimi was a matriarch in the finest sense of the word.

Mimi is pre-deceased by her husband of 63 years, Seymour, her brothers Milton and Bernie, and her sister Thelma. Mimi is survived by three sons (Dave, Rob, Rick), three daughters-in-law (Beth, Sande, Ann), six grandchildren (Ben, Hannah, Allison, Mike, Evan, Max), her dear niece Lynne and Lynne's daughter Jordyn, and a large extended family.

A funeral service will be held at Shir Shalom (Woodstock Area Jewish Community) in Woodstock, VT on Friday, September 8 at 1:00 PM, immediately followed by the burial. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations be made in Mimi's honor to the Quechee Library Association, Woodstock Area Jewish Community (WAJC), or the charity of your choice.
