Taylor Carter
July 12, 1935 – August 26, 2018
Marian Virginia Taylor Carter, a teacher of physical education and modern dance for many years, died August 26, 2018 at the Jack Byrne Hospice Center of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. She was 83 years of age, and was a resident in Tempe, Arizona, and Woodstock, Vermont. Previously, she was a long-term resident in Westfield and Mountainside, New Jersey.
Marian was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the younger of two children of Mary Fairbanks and Jay Taylor. Raised in Baltimore and Springfield, Pennsylvania, she attended public schools in Springfield and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree from West Chester State Teachers College, now known as West Chester University. She obtained a Master's Degree in Dance Education from Columbia University.
Her teaching commitments included Westfield Senior High School, Goucher College, The Hartridge School, The Vail Dean School, Saint Elizabeth's Academy and other assignments in New Jersey, and in retirement, substitute teaching in Arizona and New Jersey. She was a certified gymnastics judge, field hockey referee, and enjoyed coaching field hockey, softball, tennis, golf, soccer, as well as providing deep knowledge in modern, folk and other types of dance.
Marian had a particular interest in modern dance, and for many years participated in workshops offered by Martha Graham, Jose Limon, Alwin Nikolais, Paul Taylor, and many other dancers notable for important works in the early days of modern dance.
Marian committed to charitable activities including the Service League in Westfield, Trinity Cathedral in Phoenix, and a special commitment to the Arizona Veterans' Home in Phoenix.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Jack, and her daughter Paige Hiller and son Myles Carter, granddaughters Madeline and Isabelle Hiller, Ella Carter, and grandson Myles Carter, and son-in law Steven Hiller and daughter-in-law Ellis Carter. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Bill.
A memorial service is planned in Woodstock, Vermont for a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of Marian may be made to Jack Byrne Center for Palliative & Hospice Care at DHMC, 154 Hitchcock Loop Road, Lebanon, New Hampshire 03766
