Laura Gilbert-Markley, 88, passed away Sunday, March 18, 2012 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Her family was by her side.
Laura was born on October 6, 1923 in Woodstock, Vermont. She was the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth (Meyers) LaMountain.
Laura graduated from Woodstock High School in 1942 and moved to Biloxi, Mississippi where she married Earl Gilbert, also of Woodstock. They later moved back to Vermont. Laura was a nursery school teacher at the recreation center, and also enjoyed being the leader of a local Girl Scout troop. She also worked for Judge Franklin S. Billings Jr. and the Ottuaquechee Health Center for a few years before going to work for Dr. Hugh P. Hermann where she worked for 42 years, until she retired at 84.
Her greatest love was spending time with her family. She also enjoyed traveling and made several memorable trips across country.
She is survived by her four children, son Donald Gilbert and his wife Tina of Woodstock, VT, three daughters; Betty Powell and her husband Arnie of Woodstock, VT, Carol Merrill and her husband Mike of Williamstown, VT, and Anne Montgomery and her husband Dave of Montpelier, VT, 8 grandchildren, Amy (Merrill) Gilbert, Madeline Gilbert, Eleanor Gilbert, Lisa (Goode) Kelley, Robyn Goode, Linda (Goode) Prine, Robert Taylor, and Sarah Blair; 4 great grandchildren, her former husband Earl Gilbert and a number of nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Richard Markley, a brother Earl LaMountain, and a sister Katherine Wyatt, as well as one great-grandson.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, March 23rd from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock, VT. A graveside service will be held in the Prosper Cemetery at a later date.
