Joyce Ann Phillips, 89, died peacefully at home Wednesday morning August 16, 2023 surrounded by family. She was born January 17, 1934 the daughter of Fred and Mae Bell (Compstock) Wardwell.
Joyce attended grades 1 through 8 at the one room school house known as the Smith Sherburne School and then went to Woodstock High School in the village of Woodstock. In 1951 Joyce married Raymond Phillips and started a family. Raymond died at the young age of 43 in 1972 and Joyce went back to school and then worked the night shift at the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover, NH for the next 17 ½ years retiring in 1993. She also worked for a while in Rutland and Killington as a nursing assistant and at the Robert Lewis Book Bindery.
Joyce loved to crochet making many blankets for new babies, she loved to read and play cards ( especially double king pede). She enjoyed spending a number of winters in Florida. Her life was enriched by her family that included a number of special friends like Mary Oldenburg.
Joyce was a long time member of the Bridgewater Congregational Church and spent many years as a volunteer for the Edwin Thompson Senior Center.
She is survived by her children; Doug Phillips, Mike Phillips, Steve Phillips, and Becky Adams, 13 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 8 great great grandchildren and many extended family. She is pre deceased by her husband Raymond Phillips, 4 children; Craig Phillips, Pam Phillips, Debra Phillips, and Diana Gildersleeve, 2 brothers; Ivan Wardwell and Myron Wardwell, 3 sisters; Elva Davis, Frederica Welch, and Elnora Fadden.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday Sept. 2nd at 2:00pm in the Riverside Cemetery in Killington, VT.
Those wishing may make memorial donations to the Thompson Senior Center, 99 Senior Lane, Woodstock, Vermont 05091.
