Obituary

Woodstock, VT Joseph Ermino Rubino August 9, 1927-December 26, 2020 Joe passed at home in his daughter Angel's arms

Obituary written by Joe Rubino himself.

I was born in my home in Hudson County NJ. I was the first born of 3 brothers, Richard and Ronnie who passed before me.  Italian was my first language which I still love to speak.   My mother was Geswalda Muller, daughter of a Merchant Marine, who married my father Erminio Rubino, son of renowned composer/conductor Giuseppe Rubino.

I graduated from Teaneck High School in 1945 where I was involved with many clubs and editor of the school newspaper. I sometimes played hooky from school sneaking into the Paramount Theater to go see Frank Sinatra.

Right out of high school in 1946 I enlisted in the US Army-Airforce where I was a Sargent, radio and morse code operator, stationed in Goose Bay Labrador conducting "secret missions."

When I returned home after three years, I went to work with my father on the linotype printing press at Il Progresso newspaper in NYC where I became a foreman.

On the GI Bill my brother Richard and I attended college together and graduated from Columbia University in Graphic Fine Arts in 1958. I went on to further my study of printing at New York University graduating in 1960.

Throughout the 1950's I went to NYC to 52nd Street and down to Birdland on Broadway to see the Jazz Greats: Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillepsie, Miles Davis and more.

My work evolved as an advertising graphic artist/typographer and as sales consultant for multiple leading firms in NJ and NY: Newark Trade Typographers, William Patrick Company, and Metropolitan Advertising Typographers. My love of the printing arts led me to teach at New York School of Graphic Arts,  Keene University, Union NJ, and Columbia School of Journalism, NYC.  I enjoyed my positions as president of several trade organizations:  Art Directors Club of NJ,  Sales Association of Graphic Arts, Printers Executive Club, and Columbia Alumni Club of Bergen and Passaic Counties, NJ. I was a popular speaker in the Graphic Arts industry.

In 1969, I went to the Woodstock Music Festival and also married my love Lynn Duffy and had two beautiful children Angel and Marc who shared the love of skiing, baseball, and the outdoors with me. We lived in Westwood NJ until 1989, then moved to Warrensburg NY in the Adirondacks and Lynn and I opened a successful Bed and Breakfast, House on Hill. I became  an active member of many chambers of commerce.

In 1998 we moved to Woodstock Vermont where my daughter Angel and her husband Todd had made their home. We explored the Upper Valley,  living in Lebanon NH and Wilder VT. Taking my passion in sales and property investment, I received my real estate license at age 75 in Vermont/New Hampshire.

In my mid 80's, to keep busy in my cooking interest ,  I worked as a short order cook and joined my daughter, Angel and her husband Todd as a Ski Ambassador at Killington Mountain. I also skied with my grandson Quinn all over Vermont.  I enjoyed volunteering at the Dothan Brook Elementary School reading with young children there and at the Haven.

I had many interests and to name just a few: flying single engine planes, target shooting, reading, hunting, cooking, gardening, fine art, Italian culture, politics and learning new things. Most of all, talking to people and being active in my family and community.

In my later years,  I moved back to Woodstock, living independently with daily visits from supportive caregivers and my daughter Angel and her family.  I loved listening to big band and piano concerts and going for strolls; talking politics. I even Facetimed and texted with my family.  I was getting around in my motor chair making friends with my special next door neighbors and enjoying connections at the senior center. I looked forward to my trips up Biscuit Hill with my family, having campfires and talking about the trees, the flowers and the beautiful view.

I light up listening to my grandson Quinn tell stories of his adventures and success in mountain biking and nordic skiing and good times with his friends. I always looked forward to seeing the talented drawings from my grandson Augustus and playing silly with grandson Leo when my son Marc and wife Egle came to visit.  Thinking of you Baby Doe as I often do, the Ole Buck.

A memorial mass was celebrated on December 30, 2020 at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church. Burial is planned for a later date in the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Those wishing may make memorial donations to the Edwin Thompson Senior Center, 99 Senior Lane, Woodstock, VT 05091
