John Alexander Heidt, 96, passed away quietly at his home in Woodstock, VT on February 22, 2016. Born in Providence, RI, he was the son of the late George J. and Alena McLean Heidt.
In 1936 he completed high school at Lincoln School Teachers College in New York City. His family lived on Riverside Drive and they attended the Riverside Church where, as a young man, he was mentored by Reverend Harry Emmerson Fosdick.
Subsequently John entered Brown University and graduated in 1942. After graduating from Harvard Divinity School in 1946 he was ordained at The Second Congregational Church of Winchester, MA, where he became the Associate Pastor. He was Associate Pastor at the First Church in Cambridge, MA, and Pastor of the Pleasant Street Congregational Church, Arlington, MA and Weston Congregational Church, Weston, MA.
In 1977 he moved to Woodstock, VT., where he became owner of the Prince and Pauper Restaurant. He enjoyed spirited discussions on philosophy and politics. He and his wife spent 35 summers at their home on East Lake Ainslie, in Nova Scotia, visiting cousins and making many new friends. He was proud of his Celtic heritage and loved Scottish fiddle music and step dancing.
He will be remembered for his good humor and fondly missed by his family and friends. He was a member of the North Pomfret Congregational Church, UCC, North Pomfret, VT and an adherent of the Alexander Grant Memorial United Church at East Lake Ainslie, Nova Scotia.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy M. Heidt, son Jeffrey L. Heidt (Myra Green),Lincoln, MA, daughter, Dorothy Ferro (Joseph),Bedford, MA , daughter in law, Patricia Kravitz, Mansfield, MA, William Vickery (Amy), New Boston, NH, Benjamin Vickery (Cris), Gorham, ME. He was predeceased his son, Peter E. Heidt and daughter, Nancy Louise Heidt.
He leaves behind thirteen grandchildren: Sarah Provance (Alan),Nashua, N.H., Audrey O'Shaughnessy , (Shannon) Watertown, MA, Jessica Heidt (Tim) San Francisco, CA, Benjamin P Heidt, (Kathrine) Richmond, VA , Michael, James and Jeffrey Ferro, Bedford, MA, Lauren, Lisa and Sarah Vickery, New Boston, NH, Haley Vickery, Gorham, ME, Michael Green (Laura Carey) and Alexander Green (Katie), Glen Ridge, NJ and seven greatgrandchildren.
Memorial service will be held at the North Pomfret Congregational Church, North Pomfret, Vermont, on March 5 at 11:00 a.m.
