Obituary

Jeannine W. Colby, 96, died peacefully on March 22, 2025 in Woodstock, Vermont.

Jeannine Wheeler Colby was the epitome of the resolute woman of the Green Mountain State. A lifelong resident of Woodstock born in 1929, she married her one love, dairyman Evan Colby, in 1946 and raised four daughters on the King Farm. Besides tending to her growing family, Jeannine helped with day-to-day chores and projects on the farm. Beyond the farm, she worked as a housekeeper at the Woodstock Motel. Jeannine's determination, penchant for excellence, and work ethic was most evidenced as an employee at The Homestead retirement facility where she began in 1964. For over fifty years she cleaned, cooked, served and ultimately became manager of the kitchen. In these capacities she touched hundreds of lives of elderly area residents. Although this amazing legacy was a source of pride, she was most dedicated to her family. She is survived by daughters: Janice Rogers of Randolph, VT; Joanne Logan of Coventry, VT, and June Meek of Summerville, SC. She was the grandmother of eight, great grandmother of fourteen, and great-great grandmother of one. Jeannine was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Evan, and a daughter, Jerri Cole. She outlived her many siblings: twin sister Natalie Bartlett Young, brother Donald Wheeler, and sisters Dorothy Wheeler and Regis Jillson. Jeannine enjoyed hosting family meals and playing table games, which has led to a lifetime of fond family memories. The values and standards by which she lived and worked, and the stoicism by which she faced challenges, have been imparted on subsequent generations. The family intends to host a remembrance gathering at a future date.
