Jean Nelson Conklin, 97, longtime resident of Woodstock, Vermont died at MT Ascutney Hospital on November 5, 2019 following a brief illness. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert Conklin, her sisters, Mary Tanner and Marjorie Hunt and her brother George Miles Nelson Jr. She is survived by three sons: Neil and wife Hilary Sheevers of Prescott, AZ, Danny and wife Andree of Milford, NY, and Miles of Haverhill, NH. She is also survived by five grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Jean was born on March 27, 1922 in St Johnsbury, Vt daughter of George Miles and Lessie Nelson. The Nelsons moved to Meadow View Farm on the Pomfret Road in Woodstock in 1929. Jean graduated from Woodstock High School in 1940 and graduated from Syracuse University in 1944. She then worked for the New York State Extension Service in Columbia County. There she met Albert Conklin and they married on October 12, 1946. They moved to South Strafford, Vt where they began building a dairy farm. In 1952, Jean and Albert moved to Meadow View Farm in Woodstock where they lived for 60 years until they moved to the Woodstock Terrace.
An active member of the Woodstock community, Jean taught Home Economics at Woodstock Union High School and is fondly remembered by her many students. For many years she served as an elected Lister for the Town of Woodstock. She was also a Justice of the Peace, on the Board of Civil Authority, worked at the information booth on the Woodstock Green and served on the Boards of the Norman Williams Public Library, the Homestead, the Mertens House and the Woodstock Historical Society. She was also a member of the North Pomfret Congregational Church and the North Pomfret Ladies Circle.
A Memorial service will be held at the North Pomfret Congregational Church on December 14 at. 1 :30pm. The service will be followed by a reception at the Thompson Senior Center in Woodstock. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the G.M. Nelson Jr Scholarship Fund c/o Woodstock Union High School or the North Pomfret Congregational Church.
