Obituary

Woodstock, Vermont
Jane Leonard, 89, born in St. George, Kansas April 24, 1928 the oldest daughter of Elvira and George Barnett died suddenly on October 27th at The Terrace in Woodstock. Jane left her home in Kansas, moved to Vermont, and married Richard C. Leonard Jr of North Pomfret, Vt on May 14, 1947. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past May.

The couple built their own home in the 1950s on Roberts Rd in Woodstock and resided there until two years ago when they moved into The Terrace. For many years they enjoyed being snowbirds, traveling between their home in Vermont and the home they built in Lake Hamilton, Fl.

The Leonards are the parents of seven children: Janice (Leonard) Morrow of Winter Haven, Fl; Thomas Leonard of Hartland, Wayne Leonard of Woodstock, Douglas Leonard of Woodstock, Marshall Leonard of Jeffersonville; and Susan (Leonard) Toll of Harvard, Ma. Jane is predeceased by an infant son Steven Harvey Leonard. She is survived by 14 grandchildren, predeceased by one grandchild, Samuel Barnett Leonard. She is also great-grandmother to 14. She was lovingly called ''Grammie" by her grandchildren and the numerous young friends she made throughout her life.

Richard and Jane established Leonard's Gas and Electric Service of Woodstock and ran their business for over 40 years. When Jane first arrived in Woodstock, she worked at the Vermont Standard; she was also a secretary at Woodstock Union High School. She was an active member of St. Anne's at Our Lady of the Snow's, the Prosper Women's Club, and the Lake Hamilton Woman's Club.

Jane loved traveling, playing cards and games, gardening, and reading. Richard and Jane were lucky enough to see much of the world together: from Alaska to Hawaii, Central America, Greece, and Italy. Jane had an insatiable curiosity and a desire to learn about every facet of the world. They owned six different motor homes and made friends throughout the United States as they traveled.

The greatest joy in Jane's life was her family. She liked nothing better than playing with her grandchildren and great grand-children. She will be remembered for her seemingly endless energy, fantastic homemade pies and rolls, her strong faith, great sense of humor, quick smile, and eternal optimism.
