Jane Kendall died at Mertens House in Woodstock, VT on Tuesday, Sept 12, 2017 with her niece Dawn, at her side. Jane was born at home in Swampscott, MA on Dec. 23, 1930 to Robert Fairn and Mildred Jagger Lewis, joining her siblings, Virginia and Robert Jr.
Jane spent her elementary school years in Swampscott. She graduated from Walnut Hill School and from Colby Junior College, qualified to work as a medical secretary. Jane moved with her parents to South Woodstock, VT in 1945, settling at the old "Blake Place". Jane was 15 and when not at boarding school, she learned to ride her Palomino mare,, "Marigold" with her Black Labrador, "Chang", following along. It was in South Woodstock that Jane met Alan Kendall and learned to drive a Jeep and hunt deer. Jane and Alan were married in Woodstock on August 4, 1951. They moved to Burlington while Alan completed his engineering degree at U.V.M. Jane worked for an arthritis specialist, Dr. Bland. The Kendall's lived in Rutland, VT where Kathy was born in 1955 and Linda born in 1962. The family moved to Penfield, NY where Alan worked for Xerox, and their son Roderick was born in 1964. The Kendall's moved to Marion, NY where they built a home in the early 1970's. Jane adored her dogs, having grown up with a Newfoundland and a Labrador Retriever. She insisted on obedient dogs, patiently training her Labs as well as two dogs for her parents.
Jane had a brief career in real estate in addition to her role as a homemaker. She loved to dance and was a graduate of the Arthur Murray School of Dance.
Sadly, during this time, Alan was ill with Huntington's Disease, losing his battle in 1986. In July, 1987, Jane married Alan's older Donald and with their union, two nephews and a niece became Jane's stepchildren. Jane and Don first lived in Orchard Park, NY, before happily moving back home to Woodstock.
After Don's death, Jane preferred to remain alone with her dogs for company. She looked forward to calls from her daughters, stepchildren and her niece, at appointed hours each week.
Jane was predeceased by her parents, her husband Alan and daughter Linda, her husband Donald, her sister Virginia Harding and brother Robert Lewis.
She is survived by her daughter Katherine Donahue (Francis), her son Roderick Kendall and her granddaughter Nicole. Surviving too are Jane's stepchildren: Donald Kendall Jr. (Diane), Julie Oberstrotter (Peter) and Jeffrey Kendall and his partner, and step grandchildren: Corrine and Lincoln, Mark Lisa and John. Jane leaves behind two sister-in-laws; Nancy Lewis of South Woodstock, VT and Lorraine Kendall Tarrant of Florida. Many nieces and nephews on both the Lewis and Kendall sides will miss Aunt Jane.
