Jane Kaplan
Adelson
January 11, 1925 – November 15, 2024
Jane Kaplan Adelson, 99, passed peacefully on the morning of November 15, 2024, in Randolph Center, Vermont.
She was predeceased by her parents, Rabbi Samuel and Mrs. Devera Kahn Kaplan, by her husband of 64 years, Richard Adelson, and by her brother, Rabbi Solomon Kaplan, and sister-in-law, Peggy Michael Kaplan.
Jane is survived by her four children: Candace Adelson (Jerry Rossman), Patricia Gould (Top Gould), Alice Seidenberg (Fred Seidenberg), and William Adelson (Erna P. Adelson); three grandchildren: Erna L. Adelson (Ian Ryen), Samuel Adelson (Brittany Adelson), and Lily Seidenberg; and one great-grandchild: Martin Ryen.
Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on January 11, 1925, Jane also lived in New Jersey and New York. She attended Far Rockaway High School in Queens before earning her bachelor's and master's degrees in Psychology from the University of Cincinnati (OH). After graduation, she became a parole officer for the Women's House of Detention in New York City.
In 1946, Jane married Richard Adelson, and together they raised their family on Long Island. Jane was a devoted Girl Scout troop leader for many years. She then returned to school at Columbia University Teachers College for a degree in Health Education and subsequently taught in Long Island public schools. In the 1970s, Jane and Richard Adelson moved to North Pomfret, Vermont, where Jane proudly served a term as Justice of the Peace. Jane and Richard ran a nationally respected antiquarian book business from Vermont for over thirty years, with Jane specializing in rare children's books. For several years, they also owned a clothing boutique in Hanover, New Hampshire.
In her final years, Jane was lovingly cared for by the staff of the Menig Nursing Home (Gifford Health Center) in Randolph Center, Vermont, to all of whom her family is deeply grateful.
Jane will be laid to rest in Montclair, NJ, on December 11, 2024. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Jane's memory be made to your local library, to the Gifford Health Center (https://giffordhealthcare.org/donate/), or to the Osborne Collection of Early Children's Books at the Toronto Public Library (https://tplfoundation.ca/osborne/).
