Obituary

Bridgewater, Vermont

On March 11, 2022, Horace Carr passed away peacefully at his home in Bridgewater. He was born on March 9, 1921, to Charles & Eva Carr of Lebanon NH. Horace was the fourth of eleven brothers and sisters. As many children during the depression, Horace learned at a young age the value of family and hard work. These values were his foundation that carried him through his 101 years of life, which he would be the first to tell you he truly enjoyed to the fullest.

Horace was best known in the area for his many years as a salesman at Miller Auto in White River Junction, but before his time at Miller's, he worked at the Vermont Baking Company in White River and in the card room at Dewey Mills. In 1939 he started delivering the mail from White River Junction to Bridgewater. It was on these trips to the Bridgewater post office that a young lady caught his eye and would become the love of his life, Kathleen Allard. They were married in 1945 and made their home in Bridgewater where they raised their daughter, Paula (Maxham). Horace had a deep commitment to family and community and always had a "can do attitude".

Horace was a proud WWII Veteran; he joined the Army in 1942 and spent three years in the South Pacific with an anti-aircraft unit. He was honored to be a member of the American Legion, VFW, Masonic Lodge, Bridgewater Congregational Church UCC and Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department. Horace was passionate about cars and loved wheeling and dealing, but he also enjoyed bowling, golfing, singing in the choir and spending time with family and friends.

Horace was predeceased by his wife and daughter in 2018 and 2019. He leaves behind his son in law Bruce Maxham, three granddaughters Michelle (Dennis) Gareau of Rockland MA, Karen (Glenn) Poland of Bridgewater VT and Jennifer (Paul) Beauchamp of Shelburne VT, along with four great grandchildren, Joshua Maxham (Beth Fish), Austin Gareau, Abby and Jacob Beauchamp. Horace also leaves behind his brother Walter "Danny" Carr of Spring Hill Florida and sister-in-law Pauline Carr of Bridgewater, sister-in-law Margaret "Peggy" Allard of Port Charlotte, Florida along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Horace and Kathleen spent thirty plus winters in Florida and fully immersed themselves in their community there. They cherished their Florida friendships and thought of many of these people as their extended family.

Special thanks go out to the wonderful care and support Horace received from Hospice, VNH, VA Staff, Rhonda White, Kayla Rose, Robin Ellis, Kathy Cardente and Linda O'Neil. And to his good buddy, Gordon Worth, who has spent countless afternoons with Horace over the past couple of years. He truly looked forward to each and every one of your visits! In Horace's words, "Thank you everyone for all that you have done for me over the years, so glad to have known you".

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Bridgewater Congregational Church UCC, PO Box 4, Bridgewater VT 05034 or the Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department, 7392 US Route 4, Bridgewater VT 05034.

A graveside service in celebration of Horace's life will be held on Saturday June 18th in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery beginning at 11:00am.
