Harvey Lathrop
Gray
October 29, 1938 – January 16, 2019
Harvey Lathrop Gray of Quechee and Barnard, VT died peacefully at the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative and Hospice Care in Lebanon, NH on January 16, 2019 surrounded by his family. He was born in Hartford, CT on October 29, 1938. He was predeceased by his parents, Carl Albert Gray and Barbara Brown Gray. This summer, a Celebration of Life will be held at Brookside in Barnard, VT, his happy place.
Harvey was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and a gift to all who knew him. He will be dearly missed by his wife, Margaret Bartlett Gray, whom he married on October 31, 1964 at the Coast Guard Academy Chapel in New London, CT. He is survived by his sons, Alexander Lathrop Gray (Elizabeth) of Canaan, NH and Elliot Willard Gray of South Burlington, VT; by his sister, Linda Gray Burdet of Lyndon Centre, VT, and by his brother, Vernon Carleton Gray, of East Burke, VT; and by his five grandchildren Emery Lathrop Gray, Seth Wagg Gray, Walker Bartlett Gray, Brooks Willard Gray and Porter Phillip Gray.
Harvey was a 1957 graduate of Brooks School in Andover, MA where he played soccer and tennis and made life-long friends. In 1961, he graduated from Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT, later organizing many reunions for his classmates on the ski slopes in Sun Valley, ID and Europe. After college, Harvey served in the United States Coast Guard as a Lieutenant prior to completing his MBA at Columbia Business School in 1966.
Harvey joined Pitney Bowes in Stamford, CT where he spent his career working in sales, including many years as the National Accounts Manager.
Harvey was active on many Boards, including Fairfield Country Day School in Fairfield, CT, the Southport Area Association in Southport, CT and the Barnard Education Fund in Barnard, VT. He, along with his wife Marge, built Habitat for Humanity homes in Costa Rica, Northern Ireland and Chile.
Harvey enjoyed traveling with his family, whether in a VW camper across America and Europe or on his Nordic Tug adventures with Marge. Harvey grew up sailing in Maine and sailed in Bermuda Races, including captaining Petrel in 1964. He loved to dance - especially the two-step. He loved hiking and riding his John Deere tractor, mowing his fields and those of surrounding neighbors because he enjoyed quietly helping others. Working outside cutting brush, blowing up rocks, cutting down trees or splitting wood gave Harvey great pleasure and purpose, often followed by a visit to Teago General Store. When not working outside, you could find Harvey attending his sons' sporting events, eating ice cream or looking for a yard sale. He loved spending winters in Sun Valley, ID doing many top to bottom continuous runs on Warm Springs while employing his graceful reverse-shoulder style, even with modern equipment. Harvey was known as Hugs by his grandchildren. He loved skiing with them at Suicide Six, giving them rides in the Model T and teaching them how to fish with alder poles and barbless hooks.
