Obituary

Woodstock, VT – Gretchen Wustlich Russell, 85, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2024 at her residence. She was born February 12, 1939 in Hanover, NH. The daughter of Charles Agustus Wustlich and Eleanor (Miller) Moody. Gretchen spent her formative years in Woodstock, VT, where she attended local schools. In 1956, she graduated from the Stoneleigh Prospect Hill School for Girls in Greenfield, MA. She went on to earn her associate degree from Bay Path Junior College in Longmeadow, MA, in 1958, followed by a bachelor's degree from American International College in Springfield, MA, in 1960.

After completing her education, Gretchen moved to Boston, MA, where she lived for five years. During this time, she dedicated herself to service, working with the American Red Cross and the YMCA. In 1967, she returned to Woodstock, where she took over the management of her family's Hob Knobble Farm on Peterkin Hill, a role she embraced with passion and commitment. Starting in 1988, Gretchen spent winters in Sarasota, FL, where she enjoyed relaxing on Lido Beach.

Gretchen was an active member of the Green Mountain Horse Association, Gay Winds Riding Camp, and the Long Hill Snowmobile Club, among many other community organizations in Woodstock and South Woodstock. She played a key role in facilitating two local businesses in Woodstock, contributing to the vitality of the community. Gretchen found great joy in entertaining her family and friends at her farm, where she was particularly known for hosting lively and memorable pool parties. She was fondly known for her favorite saying, "Hell of a deal," which added her personal touch. She was also a devoted animal lover while living on the farm with her cherished cats "Foofer" and "Slick" and her loyal dog "Sheba (Baa)" as constant companions.

Gretchen was predeceased by her half-sister, Heidi Lovell-Winston of Salem, NC, and is survived by her half-sister, Sandra Dupuis of Weare, NH along with several beloved members of her chosen family, The Hazens. Gretchen was born with a philanthropic heart and gave generously to local organizations. Donations can be made in her name to the Woodstock Fire-EMS Department, South Woodstock Fire Department and the Dartmouth Cancer Center.

Cabot Funeral Home is entrusted with her final arrangements. Calling hours will be held on Friday September 27th from 4:00ps to 6:00pm at the Cabot Funeral Home.. A private graveside service for family and close friends will take place at the River Street Cemetery in Woodstock, VT.

Gretchen was surrounded by the love and care of her friends and family in her final years. They would like to acknowledge and express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers from Passion for Home Care for their kindness and support. Gretchen will always be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing her.
