Obituary

South Woodstock, Vermont

Gray H. Perkins passed away suddenly on September 26 after a brief stay at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital in Lebanon, N.H.

Gray was born on September 26, 1936 and was adopted by G. Holmes and Georgia Perkins at an early age. He spent his formative years in Boston and his summers on Martha's Vineyard where he enjoyed sailing. Gray attended a number of schools including Fay, Dexter, Groton, The Hill School, and The University of Pennsylvania.

During a cruise, he met and married Janet S. McGowen. Two sons, Geoffrey and Christopher were born. Gray and his family moved to Vermont in 1972 and purchased The South Woodstock Country Store. "The Store" had been dormant for a number of years but quickly became an informal meeting place where locals would read their daily papers and discuss the news of the day over cups of coffee.

Outside of the store, Gray immersed himself in several local volunteer positions including the Town Select Board, the School Board and on the board of the Woodstock Youth Hockey. It was through his love of hockey that he coached many Woodstock Players over the years.

Gray pursued his passion for tennis right into his 80's. He had been nationally ranked in the father/son division and went on to win tournaments on Martha's Vineyard, Philadelphia and the Woodstock Athletic Club.

After his marriage ended, he met and married Michele Kontargyris who was the mother of two sons, Stratos and Eric which he happily raised as his own.

In 2001, "The Store" was sold. After retiring, they both took up golf again while Gray pursued his love of tennis. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren swimming at the Kedron pond or playing tennis during the summer.

Gray was predeceased by his sister, Jennifer, in 1996 and his first wife, Janet, in 2009. He is survived by his second wife, Michele, and her two sons and by his sons, Chris and Geoff and six grandchildren.

A Family gathering will be held at a later date.
