Gerard F. Gramling, beloved husband and father, lifelong resident of Woodstock died Monday April 18, 2011 with his wife at hi side at Genesis Care in Lebanon, NH after an extended battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
He was born July 20, 1925 in Woodstock to Julius and Elizabeth (Kruse) Gramling and attended Woodstock schools. He enlisted in the Army 106th infantry in WWII. At the age of 19 he was captured in the Battle of the Bulge and spent the winter of 1944 in a P.O.W. camp named "Slaughterhouse Five" in Dresden Germany during the Allied firebombing of the city.
He returned to Woodstock and married Nedra Heselton on October 21, 1950. They built their home and raised 4 children and shared over 60 years together. He was a master carpenter and furniture maker who worked for Armand Martin and then A. W. Frizzell and Sons until his retirement. He built and renovated many homes and buildings in the Woodstock area including the Billings Farm and Museum. He loved being in the woods and hunting and also playing his guitar.
He is survived by his wife Nedra of Woodstock, children Marlene Katz of Derry, NH, David Gramling of Auburn NH, Linda White of Lebanon, NH, Philip Gramling of Vergennes, VT, 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Bernadette Osmer of Woodstock, brothers Edward Gramling of Strafford, Lawrence Gramling of Hartland, Thomas Gramling of Perkinsville, Eugene Gramling of Alabama, Paul Gramling of Louisiana, Richard Gramling of Georgia and many nieces and nephews.
He was pre deceased by his sisters Eleanor Walker and Veronica Morgan.
A Catholic Mass will be celebrated Monday April 25, 2011 at 11:00 at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Woodstock with a gathering downstairs at the church to follow. Internment with military honors will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Woodstock Fast Squad, South Woodstock Fire Dept., or the Alzheimer's Research Foundation.
