Obituary

Elizabeth (Betsy) Watmough Goldsborough died March 11, 2018 in Woodstock, VT from Alzheimer's disease. She was 88. Betsy was best known as a prolific artist who painted countless pastel portraits and landscapes in pastel and watercolor. Her amiable spirit was obvious to all who met and knew her.

Betsy was born in Portsmouth, VA September 1, 1929, the daughter of William Nicklin Watmough, Jr. and Margaret Butt Watmough. She was predeceased by her sisters Margaret Watmough Robertson and Eleanor Watmough Stout both of Ruxton, MD. She married Charles Fenner Goldsborough in 1950 and they divorced in 1972. She is survived by her three children William Watmough Goldsborough and wife Deborah Chellis Goldsborough of Gaylord, MI; Brice Fenner Goldsborough and his wife Denise Blanchard Goldsborough of S. Burlington, VT; and Jean Gasquet Goldsborough and her wife Ann Rubright of Reading, VT. She is also survived by four grandchildren, all Goldsboroughs – Mark Jeremy, Jay Fenner, Curtis Lee and William Wesley and ten great grandchildren.

Betsy graduated from The Greenwood School in Ruxton, MD in 1947. She was a selfless and devoted wife and mother. During the 1950s she worked as an Assistant Registrar at Johns Hopkins Hospital and later as a medical secretary for various private practice physicians in Baltimore, retiring in 1996.

Betsy was a natural born artist best known for her pastel portraiture. Her formal art education was at The Schuler School of Fine Arts in Baltimore. After retirement she continued to paint and further her study through workshops. She also provided private instruction in her home studio. Her paintings were shown in juried local, regional and national exhibitions. Betsy received numerous awards and special recognitions for her artwork. She actively served on Boards of the Maryland Pastel Society (founding member), the Baltimore Watercolor Society, the Maryland Society of Portrait Painters and the Art Gallery of Fells Point.

Betsy was a quiet but faithful Episcopalian who served and worshipped at the parishes of St. Thomas Church in Owings Mills, MD, the Church of the Ascension in Westminster, MD and St. James in Woodstock, VT. She had a strong connection to her land and home in the Caves Valley of Maryland. She loved vegetable gardening, cutting the grass, painting the house, cutting back the hedge and feeding the birds. She gave generously to causes close to her heart including the environment, the arts and political/peace activism organizations. To know Betsy was a beautiful honor as she emanated humor, optimism, altruism and grace.

A memorial service in Maryland will be scheduled on a later date to be announced. Donations in Betsy's memory may be made to The Maryland Pastel Society, P.O. Box 54, Riderwood, MD 21139 or the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, D.C. 20090. Please note "In Memory of Elizabeth Goldsborough"
