Woodstock, VT – Elisabeth Ann Hudnut Clarkson, 95, known universally as Nan, died peacefully on Saturday, November 21, 2020 in Woodstock, Vermont. In her final days she was surrounded by love, with visits from her daughter, Alison, and from friends at the Woodstock Terrace, and with virtual visits from many family and friends.

A formidable, capable, and loving woman, Nan was the author of You Can Always Tell a Freshman , a popular 1950s guide to college life, and of An Adirondack Archive: The Trail to Windover. She also served as a Board Member of the Buffalo Museum of Science, the New York State Museum Institute and the Seagle Music Colony, and she was a member of the Vestry of Trinity Church Buffalo. She received her BA from Wilson College and her MA from SUNY Buffalo

She was also a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, cousin and friend. A grand hostess, she loved entertaining at her homes in Buffalo and in the Adirondacks. Nan is survived by her daughter, Alison Hudnut Clarkson (Oliver Goodenough); her sons, David Beecher Clarkson (Martha) and Andrew Elliott Clarkson (Laura Carney); six grandchildren; and her brother, Herbert Beecher Hudnut, Jr. Her cherished husband, William M.E. Clarkson, died in 2018. Because of the Covid-19 restrictions, plans for a Memorial Service will be postponed until later in 2021.
