Doris Mills (Lingelbach) Brettell, of Woodstock, passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, November 25. She was born on January 8, 1928 in Valley Stream, NY, to Alonzo and Emily Mills. She attended Valley Stream Central High School and Westbrook College in Portland, Maine, where she studied English Literature.

Doris married Charles E. Brettell and moved to Barnard, Vermont in 1951 where they raised a large family. She was known for her compassion and love for her children, for animals and the natural world.

She was also an active equestrian, skier, gardener, swimmer, fabulous cook and in her later years was often seen scooting around town in her Miata.

As a young person, she had developed an ardent interest in politics and world affairs and later served on the Thetford Selectboard and as a State Representative for Thetford, Fairlee and West Fairlee, from 1985-1994. In addition to her dedication to the House's Environmental Committee, Doris was also a member of VPIRG; the Upper Valley Services; Thetford and Woodstock Democratic Committees and, in 1988, served as a Vermont State delegate at the Democratic National Convention.

Surviving her are: Wendy McRae (Ian); Rebecca Brettell; Chip Brettell (Sara); Dana Brettell (Oscar Ruiz); Duncan Brettell (Judy); Lon Brettell (Mireille); ten grandchildren: Thalia, Sam, Sam, Christopher, Ben, Julia, Soren, Ian, Khara and Eben, five great-grandchildren, and dear friend Terry Davis.

There will be a celebration of her life at Claire's Heart Rock Kitchen, Spooner Building, 217 Maxham Meadow Way, (Rte. 4) Woodstock, on Monday, December 2 from 4:30-6:30 pm.
