Donald
Doubleday
March 1, 1944 – January 2, 2023
Donald Clark Doubleday, 78, died at Mt. Ascutney Hospital on January 2. He was born at Mary Hitchcock Hospital on March 1, 1944, son of Frederick and Patricia Doubleday, the third of six children.
As a boy who grew up with the Kedron Brook in his backyard, Don became an avid fisherman, and it was not unusual to find him up at the crack of dawn and seeking out his favorite spots along the golf course. Two of his nephews, Nathan and Ian, recalled how much they enjoyed Donny when he used to take them fishing. His kindness was something they both mentioned immediately when they heard of his death.
He was an avid golfer and loved playing with his father and brothers at the Woodstock Country Club. When he lived in Burlington, he had a membership and played at Kwiniaska for years. Some of his favorite memories are his trips to Myrtle Beach with his golfing buddies. Donny loved his sports, when not playing he immensely enjoyed watching them on TV. He always knew where Keegan Bradley was in the standings. As a diehard Boston fan, he often "donned"* his Celtic jacket, his Red Sox's cap, Patriots jersey or Bruins winter hat. * He loved a good pun or even a bad one.
Don was also an accomplished drummer and played with a few bands back in the 70's.
Once when Don was ten years old and caddying at the Country Club, he heard someone calling for help from the Kedron Brook. He ran over to the first bridge, which had a swimming hole in those days, jumped off the bridge, and pulled a girl who was drowning out of the water and to the bank and saved her life. Many years later she called him and traveled to Woodstock to see him, and they remained in touch from that time forward.
He graduated with the class of 1962 from Woodstock Union High School, where he played football, basketball, and baseball for four years. He went on from there to attend Vesper George School of Art in Boston and graduated from there in 1965. He was a talented artist and worked for Amalgamated Culture Works in Burlington for many years. He drew detailed murals on the walls of the popular watering holes in Burlington, The Chicken Bone and The Sheik, both on King Street.
Burlington was his home for many years. Living above Nectar's he created several local, iconic logos in the 1980's, including everyone's favorite Chicken Bone, along with the Chew Chew Festival and The Vermont Reggae Fest. His humor often resulted in the design of funny, full pun t-shirts, Blooze Cruise and In Search of Champ posters. He also worked for East Coast Printers in Shelburne where he made lifelong friends. He occasionally would set the jokes aside and create beautiful watercolor posters for the Stowe Hot Air Balloon Festivals.
While Burlington was his stomping ground in the 80's, Brattleboro was his home in the 70's, where he worked at the newspaper, The Town Crier, and was part owner of a bar and frequented golf courses as often as possible.
He loved growing up on Maple Street in Woodstock in a close knit family with his parents, four brothers and one sister, often telling stories of delivering the paper and playing on Vail Field. Don was happy to return to his roots and moved back to Woodstock in 2012, enjoying reuniting with family, friends and Woodstock Alumni. One more note of importance, he recently adopted "The Legendary Jericho," a beautiful black and white kitty cat full of personality and spunk who filled his heart with love and companionship. Jericho, who entertained everyone at Mellishwood in Woodstock will also be missed, but has found a new, happy home.
Don was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Phyllis, and her husband, Ralph Terino, and their daughter Jessica.
He is survived by his brothers, David (Diane) of Woodstock; Brian (Marsha) of Boulder, CO; Fred (Louise) of Richfield Springs, NY; and Barry (Carol Ann) of Derry, NH and by his daughter Monica Darling (Ken) and grandson Benny DiCarolis and many nieces and nephews. Jericho has a new family
There will be a celebration of Don's life at a later date. Donations in his name can be made to your local animal shelter or to the Lucy MacKenzie Humane Society in Windsor where Don found Jericho.
