Woodstock, Vt. - Donald Atwood, 90, died at his home in Woodstock on July 12, 2011.
He was born May 29, 1921 in Bridgewater, Vermont son of Reno and Marjorie (Bassett) Atwood.
Donald received his early education in North Bridgewater near the family farm. He graduated from Woodstock High School in 1940. He was very active in sports and especially he and his late brother John played a lot of baseball.
After high school Donald returned to the family farm on the North Bridgewater Road in Bridgewater that is now owned by the Nelson Lee Family. He then went to work for his father before taking it over at the present farm in the Pomfret road in Woodstock until his death.
He was very active with the different snowmobile clubs loving every minute of hitting the trails with his family, and friends. He was seen in the fall and the spring putting up signs and taking them down for the Bridgewater snow zippers.
Donald was a member of the Vermont Farm Bureau and the Bridgewater snow zippers. For a while he worked clearing on the Faulkner Trails in Woodstock. He and his family loved to travel and have family events. Made 3 trips to Alaska, 2 with his late wife and one with his two sons, Richard and Allan. Hunting and fishing was great and he also made fishing trips to Canada with family and friends.
He married Judith Cobb on Aug. 8, 1940 she passed away Feb. 16, 2009 also in Woodstock.
Donald is survived by two sons; Richard and his wife Bonnie and Allan and his wife Linda all of Woodstock, VT, 4 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild, as well as a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Judith and parents he is predeceased by a brother John and a sister Laura Vinton
Graveside services will be held Saturday, July 16, 2011, 12 noon in the Prosper Cemetery. Rev. Beverly Anderson will officiate. A reception will follow at the Prosper Community House.
