Obituary

Deane Albert Jillson, 90, of Barnard, Vermont passed away on December 10, 2024. He was born in 1934, the son of Rex Perry Jillson and Martha Elizabeth Harrington. Deane grew up in South Pomfret and graduated from Woodstock Union High School in 1952, where he was a standout athlete in both football and baseball. He was a big WASP fan and enjoyed the fact that the football team won the state championship this year.  Deane was an early skier at Gilbert's Hill and Saskadena Six, where he enjoyed helping maintain the mountain and "tuck the face."

A left-handed pitcher, Deane's talent took him to the minor leagues with the Cleveland Indians. Unfortunately, a shoulder injury just as he was being called up ended his dreams of a major league career. He then went on to work for IBM before returning to Woodstock, where he became a master plumber and electrician.

A lifelong motorcycle enthusiast, Deane was known for his love of speed and adventure, riding his Ducatis and later his Harley. He rode across the country on his bike and raced on the track.  Many will remember him fondly sitting on the porch of the Barnard General Store, enjoying ice cream and chatting with friends and visitors. As a seventh-generation Vermonter, Deane had a deep love for his home state and was a rich source of stories about its history.

Deane was also known for his generous and helpful nature.  He was always ready to lend a hand to friends and strangers.  His friends were important to him and he enjoyed motorcycle riding, helping on projects and reminiscing with them.

Deane was predeceased by his wife and brothers Raymond and Richmond. He is survived by his daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

His family would like to express their gratitude to all who knew and cared for him. Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock and donations in Deane's name can be made to the Thompson Senior Center.
