David J. Blackwell, Sr. died unexpectedly in Chicago on September 26th while traveling with his wife, Joan. Dave was born in Towson, MD in 1927. At 17, he was selected by the U.S. Army to enter the Army Special Training Program where he was among 120 young men chosen for an intensive Japanese language program at Yale University. He served in the U. S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps in Japan during the occupation. Because of their hospitality to the occupying force, he retained a lifelong affection for the Japanese people and their language. After the war he graduated from Haverford College.
Dave retired as Executive Vice President at Mass Mutual Life Insurance Company and retired to Woodstock, VT, where he was a congregant and served twice on the vestry of St. James Episcopal Church. He loved travel, skiing at Suicide Six with his family and golfing. He was a member of Longmeadow Country Club and later, the Woodstock Country Club. Dave served on the board of the The Thompson Center for Seniors and Community in Woodstock.
He leaves his wife, Joan Blackwell of Woodstock, and two sons, D. Jefferson Blackwell, Jr. and his wife Lynn Blackwell of South Glastonbury, CT; Robert Blackwell and his wife Sharon Blackwell, and his grand daughter Kathryn Mikolinski of Cromwell CT; his special nephews, Bob, John, and Richard Englar and their families.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church in Woodstock, VT on Saturday morning October 27, 2012 at 10:00 a.m.
