Woodstock, Vermont

We are devastated to announce that Christopher Lloyd passed away Saturday evening, February 18th at his home in Woodstock. Vassie—Chris's wife of nearly 40 years—his twins Dan and So, stepson Cherif, cousin Arthur, and granddaughter Maya were all with him on his final day, surrounding him with love and care. Chris was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, cousin, father-in-law, and friend. He was an active member of the Woodstock community, and was involved in local politics, philanthropy, and environmental initiatives.

An English and French major at Oberlin college (class of 1968), Chris was defined by his unending intellectual curiosity, his sweet and social disposition, his love for language and literature, his passion for singing, and his deep reverence for nature and commitment to conservation. In his everyday life, these passions manifested in his daily walks to town, his eager enjoyment of the New York Times, mingling with neighbors at local cafes, singing in the church choir, volunteering at the polls, hunting for morels with his wife, and gardening at his home on the slopes of Mt. Peg. In just a few short months, he was transformed by an unrelenting disease that left us all in shock, and we are in awe of his bravery in the face of it. He had just turned 77 in January, and had spent the holidays surrounded by family. He was the heart of his family and his sweet, grand presence will be dearly missed.

Chris was born in Evanston, IL on January 7, 1946 to Mary Norris Lloyd and William Bross Lloyd, Jr. Theirs was a family steeped in international peace activism and progressive politics, with roots in journalism and newspaper publishing. He was the youngest of four and is survived by his two sisters, Lola Horwitz and Robin Lloyd. During his youth Chris lived abroad in Switzerland and Tunisia with his family, which helped instill in him a lifelong admiration for cultural diversity and global geography. He is preceded in death by his older brother William Bross Lloyd III, who passed away in December.

In the mid 1970's Chris joined founding publishers Peter and Jane Jennison to work at Countryman Press in Taftsville, Vermont, where he served as an editor for many years until the company's sale in the mid-90's to W.W. Norton & Company. The team was later joined by Lou Kannenstine and Carl Taylor, and specialized in books about nature, hiking, poetry, and mysteries.

Chris served as Justice of the peace for many years in Woodstock, officiating weddings including many same-sex marriages. He was also a member of the Billings Park Commission.

For Chris, libraries and free access to information were essential elements in a functioning democracy, and he served on the Board of the Norman Williams Public Library in Woodstock as President, Co-President, and Trustee over decades. Stepping in during one of the most transformative periods of the Library's history, he helped to design and fund the renovation, restoration, expansion, and automation of the building and its services. Chris was a visionary, and had a knack for steady guidance with humor and humility.

We lovingly called Chris our little bird—many a morning we would awake to the sounds of him humming uplifting melodies as he drank his coffee. Singing was one of his great joys, and he was part of the North Universalist Chapel Society choir for more than 30 years. We would like to extend a special thank you to our family friends Kathy and Valentina who helped care for Chris in his final days, to our cousin Arthur for his guidance, and to the U.U. church community for all that they've done and continue to do to support our family during this very difficult time.

A memorial service is being planned for Chris in the month of May—his favorite time of year.
