Obituary

Woodstock, Vermont

Charles (Chuck, Coach) William Worrell Jr. was born in Travis, Texas on February 17, 1945 and passed away on June 21, 2021, at the age of 76, after being well cared for by the hospice team at Mt. Ascutney Hospital in Windsor, Vermont.

Chuck was born to Elsie Patton and Charles (Bill) William Worrell and grew up in Austin, Texas with his older brother Terry Dean and younger brother Pat Murphy. Together, they spent a few brief years in Orange, Texas where his father's family was from. In returning to Austin, Bill and Elsie built a small house on the land next to her grandfather's home on Mira Loma Lane which intersected with Patton Lane, named after the family. Their home was a haven for kids who had challenging lives. One in particular became Chuck's best friend and foster brother. Paco and Chuck had endless adventures together, including hiking the Grand Canyon.

Coach attended Austin High School where he was a starter on the baseball team. He graduated in 1963 on a high note after hitting the game-winning home run in the championship against Travis High School. After graduation, he attended Texas Tech for one year on a baseball scholarship. He then transferred to Texas Lutheran College (now University) to increase his playing time. Chuck graduated from TLC with a bachelor's degree in education and explored his career options before officially settling into the field.

Chuck married young and had two children: Lance William in 1966 and Jennifer Lee in 1970.

Coach worked as an English teacher at Canyon High School in New Braunfels, Texas where he met theater teacher Harriet Y. Smith. After a short courtship, the two were married on June 13, 1974. He taught and coached football and baseball while Harriet taught English and theater. In 1975 the couple welcomed the first of four children, Deacon Yelvington, into the family. Eleven short months later, in 1976, Ramsey Gibson was born. Perrin Caetlin joined the cast in 1977, and Temple Dean Harrington finished out the team in 1979.

Chuck and Harriet took a break from teaching and experimented with a nomadic lifestyle that began with a motorcycle honeymoon. Moving between small Texas towns over several years, they dabbled in 7-11 store management, vaudeville theater productions, theater management, wooden puzzle making, and bar ownership. Eventually, Chuck returned to education while Harriet provided leadership for the local Chamber of Commerce in Bastrop, Texas. Looking for a change in weather and a more inclusive and rich cultural environment, they transplanted the family to Vermont in 1986.

Coach mistakenly assumed that Vermont was like Texas, and when hired as a football coach at Woodstock Union High School, thought he had a teaching position; he did not. Luck was on his side, however, and soon the position of Driving Educator became available. For the next 28 years he safely introduced countless WUHS students to the roads. He served as the head coach of the baseball team and continued to coach football alongside Jim McLaughlin, and later his son Ramsey before retiring in 2013.

Chuck was known for his compassion and ability to embrace children with special needs, as well as his humor, portrayal of Santa Claus, love of country music and unique one-liners. His hats, bus collection, loud southern voice and big personality will live on in the halls of WUHS.

Chuck was predeceased in life by his father, Bill Worrell and stepmother Gwynne; mother, Elsie Johnson and husband Clyde; brother, Terry Dean Worrell; foster-brother Roy "Paco" Pilgrim; nephews, Bray Michael Worrell and Gene Gallatin, and sister-in-law, Ann Worrell. Chuck is survived by wife Harriet Worrell; children Lance Baucum and wife Jessica, Jennifer Fulton and husband Danny, Deacon Worrell, Ramsey Worrell and fiancee Noelle Nunes, Perrin Worrell and boyfriend Jeff Riendeau, and Temple Worrell and wife Teressa Brown; sister-in-laws Meredith Worrell and Andrea Worrell; nieces Marcia Gallatin, Kim Zapata, Alison Heath and Kerry Yates; nephews Spencer Nimmo, Stephen Nimmo and Logan Worrell; best friend, Michael Schroeder; Pop's grandchildren, Brittani Baucum, Connor Baucum, Amy-Grace Baucum, Caleb Fulton, Harrison Nunes, Connor Riendeau, Owen Riendeau, Colt Worrell, and soon-to-be Cash Worrell; many cousins, friends, colleagues and students.
