Katomski, Sr.
September 20, 1920 – October 31, 2018
Charles J. Katomski, Sr., died peacefully on October 31, 2018, at his home at Woodstock Terrace, Woodstock, VT. He was 98 years old.
Born in West Rutland, Vermont, September 20, 1920, son of the late Stanley and Anna (Yasko) Katomski, he graduated from West Rutland High School, where he played football and basketball. After high school he moved to Windsor, VT and worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, and met Mary Caroline Gilbert, who would become his wife after World War II.
In 1941, he enlisted in the army. He served in the 43 rd Division, Company G, 172 nd Infantry, in the South Pacific. He was in actions on New Hebrides, Guadalcanal, New Georgia, New Zealand, New Guinea, and the Phillipines. He was a survivor of the sinking of the transport, SS President Coolidge in 1942 off New Hebrides.
After the war he attended Bentley College in Boston, Massachusetts and earned a degree in Accounting. He found work with Kraft Foods and worked for Kraft for 37 years, retiring as New York District Controller in 1984.
Mr. Katomski served as a Cub Scout Troop Leader, President of the Kiwanis Club of Bloomfield, Connecticut, was an active member of the 43 rd Infantry Division Veterans Association, and the Bentley College Alumni Association.
On February 1, 1947, he married Mary Caroline Gilbert of Windsor, VT. They had seven children and made homes at several locations in New York State, and Connecticut. After retirement they lived in Newport, New Hampshire and Woodstock, Vermont. Charles was pre-deceased by one son, Charles Jr., in 1971, and three brothers, Stanley, Frank, and Casmir and sisters Frances and Ann. His beloved wife, Mary, died last October 28, 2017, at 97 years of age.
He is survived by Mary Bentley (Brian Bentley), Anne Katomski, (mother of Charlotte Charbono – wife of Jason Charbono II and mother to Jason Charbono III and Emma Charbono -- and Theresa Weimann, partner of Philip Faiella II and mother of Nahimiana and Philip Faiella, III), John Katomski (Susanne Callahan, and their children Anna Sophia and Ian Katomski), Kate Katomski (Judd Mulkerin), Beth Katomski (Markus Erhlich), and Stephen Katomski (Ellen Katomski, and their children Mychal -- Jennifer Scott -- and Victoria Katomski). He is also survived by his sister Felicia Keefe, Bronx, NY, and brother Joseph Katomski, Henderson, Nevada, and many nieces and nephew.
Charlie was true, honorable, devoted, honest, fun, and adventurous. He lived life to the full with his wife, Mary, and provided a solid foundation for their seven children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved sports and horse racing – Saratoga in August was one of his favorite places – the ocean, cooking and baking. He was a pillar of strength to his family and friends and was always there to provide strength and support. He had a great sense of humor and loved to tell stories. His passing will leave a void for all who knew and loved him.
The Katomski family would like to give especial thanks to the staff at Woodstock Terrace, Woodstock, Vermont, for the loving care they extended to our parents through the past six years. They were terrific.
Visitation hours will be on Sunday, November 4, 2018, between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm, at Cabot Funeral Home, 32 Rose Hill, Woodstock, VT.
A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of the Snows, 7 South Street, Woodstock Vermont, at 11:00 am, on Monday, November 5, 2018.
Burial will be Tuesday, November 6, 2018, Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna, New York (time to be determined).
