Woodstock, VT - Carlton Wayne Hurd "Carl", born on July 31, 1945 in Rochester, New Hampshire, to Lester and Marguerite Hurd, passed away October 21, 2026 with family by his side.
Carl graduated from Spaulding High School in Rochester, NH in 1963 and from Gordon Collegein Wenham, MA in 1967 with a degree in Secondary Education. While at Gordon, he excelled in sports and was captain of both the soccer and hockey teams. He later earned his Master's degree in Education from Plymouth State College.
In 1967, Carl moved to Woodstock, Vermont, to be near Joyce, a student at the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. They married in 1968 and made their home in Woodstock-the perfect place to raise their three children, Stacie, Derek, and Holly.
Carl taught physical education at Woodstock Elementary School for 37 years, inspiring generations of students with his enthusiasm, patience, and love for movement. He also coached the girls' varsity soccer team for 20 years and started a basketball program for 5th and 6th grade girls, encouraging countless young athletes to find confidence and joy in sports.
A man of deep faith, Carl attended The Quechee Church and was a member of the First Congregational Church of Woodstock for many years, where he served as an Elder, AWANA leader, and Sunday School teacher.
Carl loved all things sports-he coached, played, and refereed throughout his life.
Being a father and grandfather was his greatest joy, and he took immense pride in watching his children and grandchildren grow and thrive. Carl loved time spent with family: watching them in sports, traveling, gardening, and exploring the woods near his home. Joyce and Carl traveled extensively often with friends and family. He participated in several mission trips to Scotland, Peru, and Ecuador.
Carl is survived by Joyce his wife of 58 years; daughter Stacie Boltin and her husband Tim, and their children Sophie and Julia of Barre, Vermont; son Derek Hurd and his wife Danielle of Boise, Idaho; and daughter Holly Merrill and her husband Joe, and their children Hannah, Corbin, and Parker of Palm Coast, FL.
He is predeceased by his parents, Marguerite and Lester Hurd, and his brother, Stewart Hurd.
During his career and in retirement Carl volunteered extensively. Two of his favorite places to spend time were Zack's Place and The Thompson Senior Center. In lieu of flowers contributions to these organizations in his name are welcome.
