Obituary

Carl Taylor, Jr., of Woodstock, Vermont, passed away on 12 April 2020, due to complications from a stroke and Alzheimer's disease.  Carl is survived by his wife, Ching-Wen; three children, May (and husband, Sean), Mark (and wife, Sara), and Isaac (and wife, Laura); four grandchildren, Merrill, Charlie, Ella, and Prosper; and, countless cherished family and friends around the world.

Born and raised in New York City to Pauline Billings and Carl Taylor, Sr., Carl nevertheless always considered Woodstock home, returning whenever he could, and finally settling there permanently after his retirement from the U.S. Department of State.  He was a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, '55; Harvard University, AB magna cum laude, '59; and, SAIS, Johns Hopkins University, MA '62.

Before joining the Diplomatic Corps, Carl authored two children's travel books and wrote for The Economist .  His State Department career spanned 25 years, with tours in Indonesia, Burma, Bangladesh, Saipan, Hawaii, and Washington, DC.  He was the recipient of many accolades, including the U.S. Department of Defense's Distinguished Civilian Service Award.

Upon retiring from government service, Carl was able to fully devote his time to his other passions  – family, community, books, music, and conservation.  He was an editor and co-owner of the Countryman Press, based in Woodstock, VT. He served as President of the Vermont Land Trust, and was active on the boards of Opera North, the Upper Valley Music Center, Woodstock Burial Grounds, and the Woodstock Architectural Review Board.  An avid fly fisherman and amateur musician from childhood, he continued to catch trout at the Lakota Club and play the clarinet until just a couple of years before his death.

Carl and Ching-Wen had just celebrated their 50 th wedding anniversary, separated by a window due to the coronavirus lockdown.  Kind, polite, and engaging to a fault, he was a gentleman to the end, and embodied an enthusiastic "thirst for knowledge" that we, his loved ones, will always try to emulate.

Due to Covid-19 concerns, services will be held in Woodstock in the summer when restrictions are lifted, on a date to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Vermont Chapter, 300 Cornerstone Dr., Williston VT 05495
