Woodstock, Vermont Sally Smith Summers a long time resident of Woodstock died on October 21, 2013 at the Mertens House in Woodstock, Vermont. She was born September 7, 1919 in Boston, Mass., the daughter of Ralph Leroy Smith and Violet Bull Smith. As Vice President of National Biscuit Company, Sally’s father moved his family frequently. Sally attended schools in several cities including Cincinnati, Pittsburg, Toronto, Boston and Newton, Massachusetts. She graduated from High School in Newton and was a student at Katherine Gibbs School in Boston. In 1941 Sally married Robert Summers of Boston and moved to Watertown, Mass. while her husband served in the U.S. Navy during World War Two. In 1946 the Summers family located in Middlebury, Vermont where Mr. Summers was employed as general manager of the Middlebury Inn and Food Service director at Middlebury College. Leaving Middlebury in 1956, the family moved to Woodstock, Vermont where Mr. Summers was employed as general manager of the Woodstock Inn. Years later Sally worked as housekeeping manager at the Inn. When the new Inn was built she managed the gift shop. Sally’s hobbies included golf, paddle tennis and reading. In winter she enjoyed traveling with her friends to play golf at various southern resorts. Survivors include, a son Robert A. Summers of Beach Park, Illinois; a daughter, Susan Summers Brownell of Bethel, Vermont; a daughter Nancy Summers Schipper of Bristol, Indiana; eleven grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Robert of Boston, Mass.; a son, Henry Gardner Summers of Colton, NY; a brother, Ralph Smith of Wayland, Mass.; a sister, Nancy Babb of Stevensville, Maryland; a great-grandson, Joshua Summers. No services are planned. Contributions can be made to Mertens House in Woodstock, Vermont.
